2100 – A Sly Pretense – Review

A_Sly_PretenseThe cover is a bit misleading (it looks like an erotic novel) but 2100, a sly pretense is actually a sci-fi / dsytopia novel. We follow a couple of characters who realized their society is not the perfect paradise and harbor of justice they think it is.

“One sentence review” could be (actually 2) : this is a small sci-fi novel you can read quickly. Classic theme and classic character types, missing a bit of originality.

The background like I said above is a classic one : a couple of years after a terrible war, the victorious side is now controlling the earth and maintain the peace by any means. Being a short novel, using a classic background is not a bad thing. Creating a rich one is not an easy task and it obviously needs more words. So, right to the point…

I feel the characters are the weak point of the novel. Since this is a short novel, having a lot of characters means you can’t really develop any of them. We also have the classic “pattern” here : the good girl (a bit naive), an idealist general, the good father, the evil overlord, etc. I think the author should had chosen one character and told the story from his point of view only. A bit more mysterious and a good way to really create a unique character.

The story is not bad and contains a couple of surprises. I feel the author also have what he needs to create a sequel and add more details and textures to the world he has created. So maybe a volume 2…

My final score : 6/10
